This would be me
I love Jesus, my cats, NPR, the Food Network, Sherlock Holmes, baking, and books–in roughly that order. I fit the generally accepted criteria for “spinster” but like to think I’m more fun than the term implies. I’m a writer by trade and a singer by inclination.
My day job is at Thomas Nelson Live Events, producers of Women of Faith and The Revolve Tour events. You might have seen my articles on Crosswalk.com or spotted me in concert with 200 of my closest friends in the Dallas Symphony Chorus. Or maybe you just stumbled by–whatever the case, welcome! Glad to have you along.
Oh, and the blog name? It refers to Psalm 34:8, ”Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

I look forward to reading more … Welcome to blogdom! ★
Followed you from a comment on NPR, then twitter, then here. And very glad I did.
Glad to have you! And thanks for the tip about NPR – I was just “someone” on the air, so it didn’t occur to me that my name would actually show up on the site. I feel semi-famous.
What a delightful adventure you have started! God is faithful to grant you the desires He places in your heart. The “Waiting” entry caused me to reminisce about the MANY days we discussed your passion to be a writer. And lookie here! I am very proud of you. You inspire me. God bless you!!
Hi. I’m reading the Summer 2009 Connections and loved your story about “Remember When Friends”. There is a Scrapbook Ministry, that has been going for almost 1 1/2 yrs at my church. The fellowship is great. I’d love to come visit your group and would love to invite you to visit us sometime. Our church is Living Hope Baptist Church, in Garland, Texas. We meet on the 3rd Saturday of each month 9am-6pm. I’d love to meet you….we share alot of the same passions, with the exception of cats…..I’m a dog person…..
Hi Teresa, I love dogs, too, so no worries. How fun that you have a group, too! We meet in Rowlett, generally on the same Saturday as you, but we don’t start until noon. Maybe I could stop by your group on the way to mine sometime.
I remember what a wonderful writer you are. I didn’t know about your love for cooking. Seems we share a lot of common interests. Who knew! Have a great season with the DSC.
Yes Susan you are a great writer. but of course you hear that before. have a blessed day
Great article “The Single Life: Take Your Brain Back to School…”! I’ve gone back to school at 39 to get dual degrees in agricultural science and engineering, and I agree with everything you’ve said. I don’t remember when I’ve been so happy.
My favorite part of the article came at the end:
“Susan Ellingburg is a natural-born Texan who sings at every opportunity, reads as much as possible, and cherishes every day she gets to spend with friends. She’s a serious foodie and not-so-serious gardener who is determined not to let being single stand in the way of living an amazing life.”
AMEN sister–you go girl!!!!!
DJ
Hello Susan,
I agree with DJ about your article of “Take your Brain back to School”.
I hear the negative talk about going back to school from people around me like “what for”, and “your wasting your time for nothing”. But as you pointed out, it’s for ME not for anyone elses desire. I’m 47 and will be attending classes for Computer Graphic and Website design for fun. If it’s God’s plan for me to make a new career of this then so be it. I’m all for it.
I love your virtual vacation, it’s awesome to read your adventure. I should try that too as I wish I could travel and see the world.
Thank you for your article in the Crossword Singles I receive.
GOd bless
Thanks, and welcome to all my new Crosswalk readers! I’m excited to be writing a new monthly column; we’ll explore all kinds of topcs and have a great time along the way. (http://www.crosswalk.com/singles)
Lani & DJ, congrats to you both on going back to school!
Encouraging word to Lani …
I went back to DBU and graduated in 2004 … at age 52 … with my Bachelor of Arts in Music and Communications. If getting a degree is your dream, don’t let ANYTHING or ANYONE talk you out of it!
Hi Susan,
I just wanted to say I love your articles in Crosswalk. You are such an inspiration to a single gal like myself and I’m very happy to have stumbled across you. I have a question and maybe you can offer a few suggestions. I’m very new to the DFW area and I’m looking for a church home. Preferably one where I could meet and build friendships with other late 30′s single women like myself. I don’t really care about denomination or size of the church….I just need a place to feel connected because I’m having a very hard time being in a new city and I feel so lost. I think if I had a church home then maybe it would feel like I was home. Any suggestions or advice?
God Bless!!
April
Thanks, April!
That whole church search thing can be a long, difficult process. I know, I spent a year looking for my current church home. (Which, btw, is Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco–if you’re close-ish, do visit us!) You didn’t say where in the Metroplex you were, but I would encourage you to find a church that’s not too far away. It makes all the difference in being able (and motivated) to get involved. I have other ideas…but I think you just gave me the topic for my next post!
Happy church hunting!
Susan
Thanks Susan,
I live in the White Rock Lake area so I guess I would be considered “centrally” located. If you have heard of any good churches in my “hood” let me know.
Take care,
April
You’re not too far from my former (much-loved) church, Highland Park Presbyterian. If you’re a traditional service type, check them out! Meanwhile, I posted my suggestions for church shopping and asked for suggestions…so we’ll see what happens.
Susan
I tried to find a contact email, but I guess this is the next best thing…
I just read an article by you called ” How to Be the Perfect Guest.” It was really funny. Thanks for the laughs.
Peace,
JoshB
Thanks JoshB,
Glad you liked my article! You wouldn’t believe how much clean-up help I got at last night’s dinner party from the guests who had read it.
Merry Christmas!
Susan
Been following your blog for a while and decided it was time to get regular updates. I decided it was time to graduate from Boundless (lots of good info, don’t agree with everything–but the site is aimed at a younger crowd and I decided it was time to find some mature Christian women to blog with).
Looking forward to it.
Girl I love your articles on Crosswalk. When I see that I have one in my inbox, my heart jumps for joy. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. You are awesome chica. You are “clothed with strength and dignity”.

Susan,
I justs wanted to thank you for taking the time to write about our organization in your blog. I manage Welcome to Cape Cod Beach Buckets, so I was very pleased that you liked our buckets.
Your pictures of the farm and the rest of the places that you visited on your trip were great. Your shots of your delicious meals made me hungry!
Thanks again for your kind words. If you plan to visit Cape Cod in the future, please let us know.
Hope you have a great summer.
Liz Eagan
Liz,
Thanks for your comments! We loved our beach bucket andhad to play with all its “toys” immediately. It was a great selection of things; we’ve used many of the products and carried our restaurant guide with us wherever we went.We are all very impressed with your organization. Keep up the good work! Susan
Hey Susan: I would love to see you read WHEN YOU GROW UP AND GET…SINGLE.
Would love to see your comments.

Mary Graham mentioned you in a Twitter post, so I clicked over to your profile, then on to your blog. I loved reading about (and seeing pictures of) your trip to Cape Cod! I need to find some travel buddies like yours so I can take a vacation.
Hey!
I just blogged about your article, The Single Life: Avoiding a Bah, Humbug Christmas!
It was simply amazing!

Hi! How are You? Mmmm!!! A Christian Woman loving NPR, to say that is is just like an Atheist saying He or She Love EWTN and Vatican Radio. That means that You are for Homosexuals and Abortion and the Far left, this is what NPR is all about. Are really a True Christian Woman, You should listen to AFR and real Christian Radio, I Hope and Pray that Sherlock Holmes is the real Sherlock Holmes not the one right now playing, because it distorts the real Sherlock Holmes movies for the 1930s and 40s and 50s, believe me I am an old movie aficionado, why because Men were Men and Women were Women and Men were not Metrosexuals and effeminate and Women were Feminine not in competition with Men but to Compliment Them. When Christians are saying they listen to NPR, I really questions Their Faith in GOd and Jesus Christ and if They really really are Pro Family and Pro Life and Pro Men, because NPR are always attacking Men and Boys, that Means that Christian loving that station are in approval of attack God and Jesus, because They were Men and Jesus was a Boy. I think You all have to need a good doze of Colleen Carrol Campbell and Jennifer Roback Morse and Issues ETC and Pro Family Groups, I do not know why there is Christian Women Groups, because there are not many Christian Men Groups, You are not much different than the Feminist in the Secular World, but You listens to NPR,mmmmm!!!. Wake up.
Love and Care and God be with You All.
Dear S: I didn’t say I necessarily agreed with NPR, just that I love to listen to it. I agree with some opinions, disagree with others, but always find it educational and interesting. I occasionally listen to “real” Christian radio–I used to work for a rather fabulous Christian radio station–but frequently find it to be trite, self-absorbed, and irrelevant. Not always! There are some great stations out there. But I’ll keep enjoying the breadth and scope of my NPR station, thanks. I’m not afraid to hear another point of view; I’ve found it can lead to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for my own beliefs.
Besides, the Car Talk guys taught me to parallel park just by listening to their show, I’ve changed the way I cook pasta thanks to The Splendid Table, I’ve been moved to tears by a StoryCorps segment . . . I don’t think Jesus is dishonored by any of that.
And, by the way, the original Sherlock Holmes had precious little to do with those early movies and everything to do with Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels and short stories, which are my preferred versions.

Dear Susan,
I just read your article “Rest…and That’s an Order” on Crosswalk.com for Singles. I loved it! It answered some questions that have been on my mind for a few weeks now. Thanks for the insight!
God bless you!
Thanks, Karen!
I heard that author interviewed on the radio one morning and knew I wanted to learn more about the different kinds of rest. And of course, once I learn something interesting I can’t stand not to share it! Glad it was helpful.
Susan
