One of the more entertaining parts of my job involves looking up facts about various dates. For instance… what happened in history on a certain date, who was born on that date, if it’s a holiday, etc. This means I run across a lot of esoteric holidays, some of which I share with my cube-mates for their listening pleasure.
Occasionally we even celebrate those holidays. For instance, for Jane Austen’s birthday, my department posted a sign stating, “You are now entering the Jane Austen Zone. Please behave accordingly.” We called each other Miss This and Mrs. That and curtsied with our eyes cast down in maidenly fashion each time we entered someone’s cube. It was mildly hilarious. There was a lot of discussion about the appropriate way to celebrate “International Toilet Day” but in the end (ha!) it passed (sorry!) without notice.
This brings us to Friday. This coming Friday, March 26, is “Make Your Own Holiday Day.” I’ve challenged my workmates to create a holiday and celebrate it Friday, complete with appropriate attire, food, and actitiv(ies). I plan to do it, too, of course.
And now, I challenge you to do the same thing. Find something you’re passionate about and celebrate it! It’s YOUR holiday, so you get to decide what the appropriate celebration is and how far you want to go observing it.
When you decide (or after you’ve celebrated) I’d love to hear about it! I’ll let you know on Friday what I’m celebrating (I’m still pondering my options) and it would be great to see what everyone else thinks is holiday-worthy.
So let’s do it! Happy _______________!
